Hamburg based shipping companies offer shipping-related professional education & training programmes for young apprentices and students. The curricula comprise programmes for seafarers i.e. future nautical and technical officers (basis for a career as a master or chief engineer officer) as well as for professions ashore. The latter with a main focus on the apprenticeship of shipping & chartering managers within the proven German dual vocational training system, which combines vocational schooling and practical training in the company. Several participating companies offer additional professional training in other business disciplines. About two-thirds of all German shipping & chartering managers are trained in Hamburg.
In addition some companies offer progressive training programmes to highly qualified candidates within the dual education system, enabling them to acquire the qualification profile required for middle and top management positions in the maritime transport sector.
